ACTINIC KERATOSES

Actinic Keratoses are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to sunlight. AKs are considered to be the first step in the development of skin cancer and have the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma. Frequent skin examinations are the key to early detection of actinic keratoses.

How are Actinic Keratoses treated?

Several treatment options are available including liquid nitrogen cryosurgery, and topical chemotherapy medications. Lakeway Dermatology also offers and advanced 2-step treatment procedure that combines Levulan® amd Blu-U® Blue Light Therapy for the treatment of AKs.

Levulan® is a topical solution that is applied to the face or scalp. The AK (precancer) cells absorb the solution making the cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to the Blu-U® light, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells.
